The Benjamin Bailey Foundation aims to perpetuate the memory of The Rev. Benjamin Bailey, other missionaries and eminent persons whose contributions enriched the social, literary, cultural and religious life of this country; And to conduct, promote and facilitate research on missionary enterprises around the world with special emphasis to its cultural, social and reformative implications; And to promote research on language and literature, translation, printing in Malayalam and book publishing; And also to conduct programmes that will discover the common elements among various social groups with the objective of promoting social and cultural harmony. The foundation is a registered organization and is registered with the Sub-Registrar of Kottayam, Govt. of Kerala.

Benjamin Bailey (1791-1871) was the founder missionary of the C.M.S. (Church Missionary Society) Station at Kottayam. He was also the first English Principal of the C.M.S. College which is the oldest college in India. As the Principal of the College, he itroduced modern curriculum and began English education in Kerala. Bailey was the progenitor of printing and book publishing in Malayalam. He was also the first lexicographer in the language. It was he who first translated the complete Bible into the Malayalam language. The Bailey Bible helped in formalising the modern Malayalam prose just as the King James Version helped in the development of the English language. Having served the country for thirty four years, he returned to England and died at the age of eighty in Salop. Benjamin Bailey Foundation aims to perpetuate the memory of Bailey and other missionaries whose contributions enriched the religious, social, literary and cultural life of this country. It Also aims to promote researches on language and literature, translation, printing in Malayalam, book publishing and missionary enterprises with a special emphasis on cultural and social harmony.This foundation has been registered with the Sub registrar of Kottayam, Government of Kerala.



Main activities of the Benjamin Bailey Foundation:


  • Publishing the Research Journal titled Malayalam Research Journal.
  • Conducting Research in Malayalam Language & Literature, Kerala Culture, Translation and Missionary contribution.
  • Organising seminars and workshops.
  • Publishing Books and Booklets related to the aforesaid areas.
