Dr. Kavitha Balakrishnan

Dr. Kavitha Balakrishnan is Lecturer in the department of Art History, Government College of Fine Arts, Thrissur, Kerala.

In 1998 Kavitha Balakrishnan took M.A in Art History and Aesthetics from M.S University, Baroda. M.G University (School of Letters) awarded her PhD in 2007 for her thesis on Discourse of Illustration in Malayalam Periodicals. At the age of thirteen, she received the Sovietland Nehru Award for painting in 1989 and participated in the Artek International Young Pioneer Camp held in the former Soviet Republic of Ukraine on the Black Sea coast. Her first book, Artek Anubhavangal published by Viswadarshan Books in 2003, was an account of her travels in the Soviet Union. She has written a number of books on. Her research study, ‘Vayanamanushyante Kalacharitram’ is slated to be shortly published by Kerala Sahitya Akademi.

The general nature of her writings tends towards claiming and marking the historical place of Keralam in the evolution of contemporary art both national and international. Articles in this regard written in English were published in the leading art magazines such as Marg Magazine, Art&Deal, Art, Etc,and TAKE on Art. The theme of development of discourse of illustration in India, especially Kerala, was brought to the notice of international researchers on illustration by Kavitha’s article published in the Journal of Illustration (Vol.3, Issue.2) owned by a London group called Intellect. In 2015, she coordinated a get-together of poets and artists and exhibited her own paintings in the hamlet of Merzbarn near London and in the village of Mathilakam in Kerala. It was an attempt on her part to highlight international cooperation of creativity and alternative positions on art and literature focusing on the rural and marginalized experiences.
